August is a Favorite in Downeast Maine

If you've ever visited us in August, you already know why it's such a special time of year.

The days are warm, the evenings are cool enough for a campfire, and nearly every weekend offers something new to explore. As the owner of Big Lake RV Park & Campground, one of my favorite things is helping our guests discover local events they might never have found on their own.

Whether you enjoy history, music, agriculture, culture, or simply exploring beautiful coastal communities, August has something for everyone. Check out all the things to do.

Here are a few of my favorite places and events to recommend.

Evening at Big Lake RV Park & Campground

Washington County Fair

One of the highlights of August is the Washington County Fair in Pembroke.

It's a true Maine country fair with livestock shows, agricultural exhibits, delicious fair food, live entertainment, and local vendors. Whether you're traveling with grandchildren or simply enjoy experiencing local traditions, it's an event that captures the spirit of rural Maine.

You'll want to plan to spend the day because there's always something happening.

Explore Historic Ministers Island

Just across the border in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, you'll find one of the region's most fascinating destinations—Ministers Island.

Connected to the mainland by a tidal road that's only accessible at low tide, the island offers a unique experience unlike anywhere else. Once home to Sir William Van Horne, the visionary behind the Canadian Pacific Railway, the estate features beautifully preserved historic buildings, walking trails, gardens, and breathtaking views of Passamaquoddy Bay.

If you enjoy history, architecture, or photography, Ministers Island deserves a place on your itinerary.

It's one of those places our guests often tell us became the highlight of their vacation.

International Homecoming Festival — Calais, Maine

Every August, the communities of Calais, Maine, and St. Stephen, New Brunswick, celebrate their unique cross-border friendship during the International Homecoming Festival.

This annual celebration includes parades, live music, food vendors, fireworks, family activities, sporting events, and community gatherings that bring both sides of the St. Croix River together.

It's a wonderful opportunity to experience the welcoming spirit of this border region while enjoying a full schedule of entertainment.

Many of our campers spend the day at the festival before returning to the campground to relax around an evening campfire.

Celebrate Passamaquoddy Days

Another event worth adding to your calendar is Passamaquoddy Days.

Hosted by the Passamaquoddy community, this celebration features traditional music, dancing, cultural demonstrations, food, crafts, athletic competitions, and activities for all ages.

It's a meaningful opportunity to learn more about the rich history and living traditions of the Passamaquoddy people.

I recommend following the Passamaquoddy Days Facebook page for event dates, schedules, and updates.

Spend a Day on Campobello Island

A visit to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, is another favorite recommendation for our guests.

Known for its rugged coastline, scenic overlooks, quiet roads, and welcoming communities, Campobello offers a relaxing day trip from Big Lake RV Park.

While you're there, explore Roosevelt Campobello International Park, enjoy fresh seafood, visit local shops, or simply take in the spectacular ocean views.

While on the island don't miss East Quoddy Light. While it's visible all the time it's only accessible at low time and worth the wait.

Don't forget your camera—you'll find incredible photo opportunities around nearly every corner.

Experience the Maine Wild Blueberry Festival in Machias

No August visit to Downeast Maine would be complete without experiencing the Machias Wild Blueberry Festival.

For nearly 50 years, this beloved festival has celebrated one of Maine's most famous natural treasures—the wild blueberry. Every August, downtown Machias comes alive with more than 250 artisans, crafters, food vendors, musicians, and family-friendly activities. You'll find everything from homemade blueberry pies and blueberry ice cream to cooking contests, live entertainment, road races, a parade, and unique handmade gifts.

If you've never tasted a fresh Maine wild blueberry pie, this is the place to do it! Every year, our campers return with stories about their favorite treats and the treasures they found while strolling through the festival.

It's an easy and enjoyable day trip from Big Lake RV Park & Campground, making it one of my favorite recommendations for guests visiting us in August.
