Fall Camping in Downeast Maine: Come Explore Big Lake
September and October are beautiful at Big Lake RV Park & Campground
There is something special about fall in Downeast Maine. It may be my favorite season!
It’s so peaceful and the evenings become crisp and comfortable, and the landscape starts putting on one of the most spectacular shows of the year. At Big Lake RV Park & Campground, September and October are some of my favorite months to be here.
As the owner, I love seeing campers arrive with their RVs, ATVs, kayaks, canoes, and fishing gear ready for a few days of exploring. And there is plenty to explore!
If you're looking for a peaceful fall getaway with plenty to do outdoors, we'd love to have you join us.

🍁 Come for the Fall Foliage
As the leaves begin changing, the landscape around Big Lake becomes a beautiful mix of reds, oranges, yellows, and deep greens. Take a leisurely drive through the countryside, explore the back roads, or simply sit around your campsite and enjoy the changing colors.
Sometimes you don't have to go anywhere at all. A quiet afternoon at the campground with a cup of coffee and the fall colors around you can be the perfect vacation.
🚙 Bring Your ATV and Ride Right From the Campground
If ATV riding is your thing, fall is a great time to hit the trails.
One of the things that makes staying at Big Lake RV Park & Campground special for ATV enthusiasts is direct access to the trails from the campground.
There's no need to spend your vacation loading and unloading your machines every day. Start your adventure right from your campsite and spend the day exploring the trails and beautiful countryside of Downeast Maine.
The cooler fall temperatures make for comfortable riding, and the changing foliage adds an entirely different view to the trails.

🥾 Explore the Downeast Lakes Land Trust
If hiking and exploring are more your speed, there are beautiful opportunities nearby through the Downeast Lakes Land Trust.
The land trust protects a remarkable landscape of forests, lakes, rivers, and trails in our region. It's a wonderful place to get outside, take a hike, enjoy the scenery, and experience the quieter side of Maine
Always full of great pictures.
🦌 Discover Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge
Another great place to explore is Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge.
With its forests, wetlands, ponds, and wildlife habitat, Moosehorn offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, wildlife watching, photography, and simply enjoying the outdoors.
You never quite know what you might see while exploring.
🎣 Go Fishing
Fall is also a wonderful time to go fishing.
Big Lake and the other nearby lakes and bodies of water provide opportunities to get out on the water and enjoy a quiet day of fishing.
There's something relaxing about an early fall morning on the water, especially when the trees around you are beginning to change color.
Whether you're an experienced angler or just enjoy spending a few peaceful hours with a fishing rod, don't forget to bring your gear.
🛶 Kayaking and Canoeing
If you enjoy kayaking or canoeing, fall can be one of the most peaceful times of the year to get out on the water.
Paddle along, take in the scenery, and listen to the sounds of nature around you. The reflections of the changing trees on the water can be spectacular.
And after a day of paddling, there's nothing wrong with heading back to camp, relaxing in a chair, and enjoying a campfire.

📸 Take a Scenic Drive
You don't have to be hiking or riding an ATV to enjoy the fall scenery.
Take a leisurely sightseeing drive through the surrounding communities and countryside. Explore the back roads, stop for photographs, discover a small local business, or find a place you've never visited before.
Sometimes the best part of a fall vacation is simply seeing where the road takes you.
🔥 Come Back to Camp and Slow Down
After a day of adventure, I think one of the best things about Big Lake RV Park & Campground is coming back to a peaceful campsite.
You can put your feet up, enjoy the evening air, cook dinner outside, sit around the fire, and talk about everything you saw that day.
You can fill your days with exploratiom—or do absolutely nothing.
It's your vacation.
